Sensors with Dark Target Applications

The dark target aerosol algorithm was initially developed for use on the MODIS sensors aboard the Terra (since 2000) and Aqua (since 2002) satellites.  It was next modified to work with the VIIRS sensor.   Recently the algorithm has been updated and generalized to operate on any spectroradiometer with appropriate bands in the visible and shortwave infrared. This page shows the current LEO, GEO and airborne instruments where the dark target algorithm has been applied.  This generic algorithm enables continuity of the MODIS aerosol record with follow-on satellite missions.

Table one below lists the current sensors (as of January 2023) where the dark target algorithm has been applied and provides a brief description of their properties.
