The MODIS dark target aerosol algorithm has been operating on the twin MODIS sensors aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites since 2000 and 2002. The latest Collection 6 algorithm has been adapted to operate on any spectroradiometer with appropriate bands in the visible and shortwave infrared. This generic algorithm enables continuity of the MODIS aerosol record with follow-on satellite missions. Additionally, the higher spatial resolution of airborne sensors can better resolve aerosol point sources and retrieve aerosol closer to clouds. Operational algorithms that will run on the MAS family of airborne sensors and on the VIIRS instrument aboard the Suomi NPP polar orbiting satellite are currently in development.
